The Splitwise expense limit, and what to do about it
Splitwise’s free plan only records a limited number of expenses per day and shows ads. Splitwise Pro removes both. If you would rather not pay, some free apps have no cap at all, Counted among them, with no ads and no account required.

What exactly is the limit?
Splitwise does not publish the number. Its Pro page promises “unlimited expenses” and “ad-free”, which confirms the free plan has neither. Users report three to four expenses a day. It hurts most at the end of a trip, when everyone wants to enter their receipts on the same evening.
What Splitwise Pro adds
According to the official page: unlimited expenses, no ads, currency conversion, charts, receipt scanning, itemization, search, default splits and, in the US, transaction import. The price varies by country.
Free alternatives
Several expense-splitting apps are free: Tricount (funded by the bank bunq), Spliit (open source), and Counted, with no cap on expenses or participants. Each makes different choices; the right one depends on what matters to your group.
What Counted gives you with no subscription: everything is encrypted on your device, nobody needs an account, over 150 currencies, statistics, CSV and JSON export, and on mobile, receipt scanning that runs on the phone.
Moving from Splitwise to Counted
Counted does not import from Splitwise. The cleanest way: settle the group in Splitwise, export its history to CSV from the Splitwise website (free) to keep it, then create a new Counted project and share the link.
Splitwise keeps real advantages: reminders, comments on an expense, one-to-one debts outside a group, percentage splits. The details: Counted vs Splitwise.
